What Are Macros?
Macronutrients are what make up the caloric content in food. This consists of carbohydrates, fat, and protein!
Calculating your macros(IIFYM) is like tracking calories but you are also tracking how many grams of carbs, fats, and protein you are consuming throughout the day. The reason this is so effective is that you know exactly what you are putting into your body. It is a great tool to use whether you want to lose weight, maintain weight, or gain weight!
The reason its so important to track is because losing weight and gaining weight is all about calories in vs calories out!
So if your goal is to lose weight you want to make sure you are in a caloric deficit and are eating fewer calories than you are expending. If you are looking to gain weight(make gains) you are wanting to be in caloric surplus, so you will be eating more calories than you are expending!
I am going to tell you how tracking macros changed my life and allowed me to lose all the baby weight and more!
My success with tracking macros:
After having my daughter Brielle, I found myself extremely unhappy with my body. I had gained about 40 pounds while pregnant with her and was very self-conscious. I knew I had to make a change so I started going to the gym and eating what I thought was “healthy”!
Naturally, by making these changes I did start to lose some weight but it was very slow. Since I wasn’t aware of everything I was putting in my body my calories were not consistent! One day I could be eating 900 calories a day( which is horrible for you).
Then on other days I would be eating 1600 calories.. hence the reason the scale wasn’t really moving. I was feeling so discouraged.
I think this is the reason people give up so easy on their fitness journey! You're killing yourself in the gym and trying to make healthy choices but you're not seeing the results! Everyone wants results! In fact, that's one of the main things that keeps us motivated!
That's what gets us in the gym and staying on track with our nutrition. So when we're not seeing that it is so easy to just completely give up.
So I made the decision to meet with a personal trainer, who then introduced to me to tracking macros(aka IIFYM)! She had briefly explained what it was to me and I was intrigued!
I went home and did tons of research! I decided to give it a shot and within those first 2 months, I had lost 15 pounds! It was so exciting because I was finally seeing those results I wanted! Not to mention I was eating WAY more food than before!
My body felt good and I was performing better in the gym because I was actually getting the nutrients and amount of food that my body needed! I just honestly believe that everyone can benefit from tracking their macros! It’s extremely eye-opening if you are unsure about basic nutrition!
The main complaint I hear from people is “I don’t want to have to track my food for forever” I’ll let you in on the secret.. you absolutely don’t have too! Once you do it for a while you will start to remember the portion sizes and the macros that make up that food!
It’s a tool that you will have for the rest of your life! No more trying out fad diets or wasting your money on detox teas!
How to get started tracking:
At first, it can seem a bit overwhelming! So I've broken it down into a few simple steps to get you tacking in no time!
1) I used IIFYM Macro calculator to figure out my macros! You just have to fill out a quick questionnaire and then they email it to you. I have found this website to be the most accurate!
2) I downloaded the app My FitnessPal. This app makes it super easy to log your food throughout the day! They have huge database of foods so you simply search for the food you are eating or they have a scan feature.
3) I ordered a food scale on Amazon.
Your all set and ready to track!
Trust me, I know at first it seems daunting to track everything that you eat, but I promise once you get used to it it becomes second nature to you!
In the beginning, it is hard to exactly hit your numbers and that's okay! There were days I went over and was under on my carbs, protein, and fats. As time goes on you get used to it! You will get better about knowing what foods to eat to hit your macros!
